Metropolis — Sunday 20th May, 2pm.
A showing of the newly restored version of Fritz Lang’s epic dystopia. Perhaps the most iconic silent film ever made, influencing such films as Blade Runner, Brazil and even Star Wars. The plot concerns two lovers trying to bridge the gap in a divided society. What really draws you in is the magnificent art deco sets and special effects that are still impressive today.
I Know Where I’m Going — Tuesday 29th May, 2pm.
To finish off the Matinee Films at Lanternhouse we have an absolute gem from British directors Powell & Pressburger. It tells the tale of Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) a young woman who knows where she is going, or so she thinks. Her marriage plans are scuppered when she becomes stranded on the Isle of Mull and falls under the spell of the place, and of the local Laird (played by Roger Livesey.) Shot largely on location in the magnificent Scottish landscape, this is a deceptively simple romance and stands as one of the best British films ever made.
