Lanternhouse, as a building, was devised as a headquarters for Welfare State International, founded in 1968 by John Fox, Sue Gill, Roger Coleman and others, who shook the creative status quo with their unique form of celebratory arts and spectacle.
After many years of critically acclaimed site-specific theatre and mass participation events - including, in later years, work concerned with rites of passage like birth, naming and death - John Fox of WSI stepped down in 2006 enabling the next stage of Lanternhouse's evolution.
