July has been a busy and we’re all set to continue in August. Tyman and Rushton’s Thoreau Cabin, part of our major commission The Good Life, is still situated in the Miterdale forest, Eskdale and was most recently visited by film maker Steve Pool. Focusing on the eerie side of living in the woods, check back soon to find out more about what he has discovered during his three night stay in the wilderness.
The schools are breaking up and what better way to fill the time than with some unusual and quirky workshops here at Lanternhouse. The ‘Come and Have a Go’ Show with local artists Mary Stark and Ellie Chaney promises to be ‘A one day spectacular celebrating the adhoc and the accidental’. The 'Come and Have a Go' Show is the artists' second adventure in collaborating together. Both are interested in celebrating the everyday and creating artworks which invite the public to participate and reinterpret the work. This multifaceted work includes a variety of events and workshops; and will culminate in a 'one day spectacular' where the everyday and the eccentric can be entered for display. With a series of family workshops here at Lanternhouse offering everything from puppet making to miniature gardening these great afternoon workshops can stand alone or support you in making entries for the finale show.
This weekend we have a great project brought to us by artist Monica Ross. On Saturday 16 July Lanternhouse is inviting people to take part in a collective recitation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with Monica. Take this chance to learn a small part of the Declaration of Human Rights and recite it in public, in your own language, as part of this unique performance. Everyone is welcome and we hope that the recitation will fully reflect all the voices and languages of our community. The performance of this collaborative piece will take place at 8pm on Saturday 16 July with refreshments and discussion afterwards. This is a free event, part of the Anniversary- an act of memory UK Tour 2011-2013 is supported by Arts Council England and endorsed by Amnesty International UK and the British Institute of Human Rights.
Virginia Nimarkoh, the first in our series of speakers, is an artist based in London. Catch her here at Lanternhouse on Saturday 25 June at 7.30pm for a free talk. Her practice incorporates photography, writing and curation. Virginia will talk about her recent photographic practice, exploring ideas of utopia through public and domestic landscapes in London and Ghana. Virginia studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University of London, completing a PhD in Fine Art Theory and Practice. Virginia has exhibited at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit; Threadwaxing Space, New York; Kunstraum Lakeside, Klagenfurt; and ICA, London.

We are deeply disappointed with the Arts Council England funding decision. Over the last 12 months Lanternhouse has done a great deal to create new art that engages people of all ages across the county. Our aim to support artists and communities has worked. We’ve increased our activities and audiences, including offering support to dozens of voluntary arts groups. Lanternhouse needs time to let the dust settle and work out our options for the future. In the meantime we have decided not to dwell on what could have been but to concentrate on the now and tomorrow. We are so very busy delivering our exciting arts project called The Good Life in Eskdale and Ulverston by Tyman & Rushton. The Good Life couldn’t be more timely dealing as it does on Henry D Thoreau’s ideas of art, society and the environment. And of course, we also have to carry on with our participation events and look after visiting artists and arts companies.
As the warmer spring weather arrives our packed spring programme is really shaping up. We have our commission called The Good Life under way now. Artists Tyman and Rushton travel to Eskdale next week to install their version of Thoreau's Cabin in Eskdale Forest. Our partners in this exciting work The Forestry Commission have been so supportive.
It was a very busy Half Term week for us here at Lanternhouse. Many thanks to everyone who came along and got involved with our events. It was wonderful to see so many new faces at Digital Soup Kitchen, don’t miss the next session here at Lanternhouse on Sunday 13 March at the usual time of 1pm – 4pm. If you would like to get involved and haven’t filled one in already, pop into Lanternhouse or email welcome@lanternhouse.org for a Parental/Guardian consent form.
Tyman and Rushton’s The Good Life has begun. Meet the artists and hear more about The Cabin and The Stage on Saturday 26 February 2 – 4 pm. The Cabin Warming event takes place at our workshop. What does the good life mean to us all? How do we connect with each other? How do we connect with Nature? These are all big themes the artists Emma Rushton and Derek Tyman are keen for us to explore. They will create two sculptural interventions as part of their Lanternhouse commission. The Cabin –based on Thoreau’s cabin will be situated in Eskdale Forest for 2 months. The Stage will be created here in our Lanternhouse Barn, and will be in situ until end of September. Emma and Derek want people to perform/ debate/ and share in this new space. So we will be hosting a week of local bands, a Speakers Corner weekend, school workshops, a comedy night, a Philosophy cafe and much more all on this exciting new space. This piece of work will involve several hundred participants in a unique experience to think, talk, perform and share in the Good Life.
We’ve a busy few weeks ahead of us at Lanternhouse. Artists Tyman and Rushton have been busy down at our workshop building The Cabin, the first part of our next major commission The Good Life. The structure is up and it really is taking shape. Why not come along to the Cabin Warming event on Saturday 26 February at 2pm. This free event at our workshop on West End Lane is the perfect opportunity to come along and hear the artists talk about the project. Half term is packed with workshops. On Tuesday 22 February we have bagged a Radio workshop for ages 12- 19 and on Friday 25 February we have a family Animation workshop. Both of these workshops are with BBC 21CC and places are booking up quickly so give us a call on 01229 581127 to secure your place now.
The Good Life is the title of our next major commission here at Lanternhouse. Artists Emma Rushton and Derek Tyman are keen to explore what actually comprises a good life. What makes us happy? How do we connect with nature? How do we connect with others? These are all themes they want to look at, and encourage others to explore through their work. Whilst they are here at Lanternhouse they are going to construct two large structural artworks that they are keen for people to interact with. The first is The Stage which will be constructed and sited in our Barn. The second is called The Cabin and will be sited in Eskdale Forest on the west coast of Cumbria. We are working with our partners the Forestry Commission on The Cabin. The Good Life will also comprise of a series of related events, films, talks, and interactive opportunities that will stretch across the spring and summer.

The Profound Colours book created by artists Grennan and Sperandio has been delivered to the 5,500 households in Ulverston. Over the last six months Simon Grennan has been asking Ulverston residents if they can think of a profound colour that they associate with the town. Through hundreds of conversations, and in many workshops Simon was given descriptions, photos, paintings and recreations of colours by local people. These images were then converted into the book.
We are looking to recruit additional casual assistants to join a team delivering high standards of customer care at Lanternhouse. Duties may include evenings and weekends, and might involve the serving of alcohol...
