We have four singles, two twins and one family room that can sleep four.
Somewhere to lay your head... Lanternhouse’s bedrooms have some unexpected crafted elements in the form of out-of-the-ordinary beds and bunks, desks, shelving, washbasins and hanging rails. Each room is different and the handcrafted features vary from room to room.
With permanent seating for 16 people, our meeting room is flexible enough to accommodate up to 50. With a projector, screen and flip chart and plenty of natural light from the room’s floor to ceiling windows, we get repeat bookings from a wide range of organisations who tell us this is an excellent space for meetings.
The barn was built in 1992 by a team of 60 volunteers. The barn’s soaring oak crucks were constructed using traditional techniques (except for a chainsaw and crane). There’s 250 oak pegs and timber from the shores of Windermere within the two medieval-style arched crucks. With floor to ceiling windows looking out into Lanternhouse’s walled garden, the space is quite unique making it perfect for both performances and parties. Larger scale meetings would also be very happy in this space.
At the moment, our library – a cornucopia of books on art and culture covering theatre, visual art, dance and participatory arts - is situated in the corridor leading to our barn but we plan to move it to another space within Lanternhouse sometime soon. You’re cordially invited to drop by and peruse the shelves – we recommend that you, a cup of tea or coffee and your chosen reading matter become acquainted in our kitchen-diner.
Up on the first floor, our music room is away from it all and overlooks - through a stable door – the barn. A roof lantern in the ceiling lights the room from the terrace above.
The studio is a large room with a lot of natural light, thanks to plenty of windows and high ceilings. Seating up to 70 people, it’s a flexible space suitable for performances, workshops and meetings. It can also be blacked out for film screenings. Ideal for dance and physical performance, it boasts custom fit dance flooring. French doors lead out onto our roof terrace with its views over Ulverston’s skyline.
Making an ideal breakout space or a space in itself for meetings and events, this eyrie has unique views over the roofs and spires of Ulverston. It’s situated next to our residency-kitchen, so it’s easy enough to self-cater, if you want to dine out up on the roof.
With its views over the roofs of Ulverston, hand crafted kitchen units and very well stocked shelves full of kitchen equipment, this is the kitchen for people staying over. And, of course, guests are very welcome to use the ground floor kitchen-diner in office hours, sharing it with staff and other guests, too.
Beck View is a designated project room for visiting artists with windows overlooking the garden and the babbling beck that runs throughout the town and through our garden.
Our fully equipped kitchen-diner is the heart of Lanternhouse where artists, staff and visitors like to congregate over a cuppa. Some organisations like to bring their own food and cook together as part of their time with us – and we can recommend a variety of outside caterers too. It’s the perfect space for small-scale intimate art events and celebrations too.
Our hack lab has a regular crew of young people using old and obsolete IT equipment and finding new, creative uses for it.
The self-contained garden studio is the ground floor of Lanternhouse’s artist space and has views out into our walled garden.
Passers-by don’t necessarily know, when they walk past Lanternhouse, what’s behind the white gates that lead into our garden. Surrounded by a stone wall and edged by a beck - crossed by a Japanese footbridge - our garden with its benches and planters makes for a chilled-out green space. It’s a labour of love - community groups are taking care of it and making it thrive with new plants and flowerbeds.
Topping off Lanternhouse, our round turret has been used as a space to make and share art – it’s even seen time as a bedroom for visiting artists. From its windows, you catch a glimpse over the hills of Cumbria.
Lanternhouse’s well-equipped double height workshop is just a short drive, bike ride or walk away in a semi-rural location, out towards Morecambe bay. Our technician can cut, weld and shape structures for you. Prices on application.
A 200-seater grassed amphitheatre comes as something quite unexpected next to our workshop. The amphitheatre can be an unusual venue for outdoor music, theatre or performance.
