Adam Clarke is an artist who uses digital and traditional techniques to inspire and engage participation in creative thinking and practice. His major work at Lanternhouse has been to develop Digital Soup Kitchen a energetic creative youth project that puts the participants in control of what happens or doesn't happen, it is a place where you can join in or just sit back and watch, play a video game, text your friends and show each other cool new things on the internet.
The Good Life is upon us. Artists Tyman and Rushton have created two socially interactive artworks for Lanternhouse. The first artwork is a replica of Thoreau's Cabin. Tyman and Rushton's Cabin is situated in Eskdale Forest in West Cumbria. Various artists, writers, thinkers and enthusiastic locals have been invited to live in the cabin for a series of days. They will then respond to the experience they've had via writing, drawings, anecdotes, or photos. The second artwork created by Emma and Derek is The Stage. This is an interactive artwork sited in our Barn. From May to September a series of new events will take place on this space. This includes a Band week, a Philosophy Cafe, a Speakers Corner weekend, schools workshops, family workshops and much more. Check our upcoming for what's on.
The 'Come and Have a Go' Show is commission undertaken by artists Mary Stark and Ellie Chaney. This multifaceted work includes a variety of events, and will culminate in a 'one day spectacular' where the everyday and the eccentric can be entered for display. A series of workshops will be running at Lanternhouse to support you in making your entries, with a special workshop offering adults an opportunity to participate. In early August a traveling stand promoting the show will be appearing in the area, so keep an eye out for it!
Lanternhouse is pleased to announce an important piece of partnership work with CLEO (Cumbria Lancashire Education Online), Dowdales School, and artist Sumit Sarkar. This is an exciting initiative focusing on developing students' skills in 3D graphic design using a new version of the powerful Open Source software 'Blender'. Lanternhouse is supporting three after-school sessions with artist Sumit Sarkar who you may remember from 'Ananta', the Arts Council commissioned work he produced at Lanternhouse during the winter of 2008-9.
What Our Mothers Never Told Us, was a piece of work undertaken by Harriet Sharkey. Harriet successfully combined real time work involving a range of community groups around Cumbria with an on-line interactive website that captured people's stories handed down to them by their mothers. Over a thousand people engaged with the work and donated moving, funny, heart warming stories and images. This work came to an end in March 2011. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project. Stories can still be left on the website. See below for address.
In May of this year Alex was invited to programme a number of audiovisual shows at Lanternhouse, inviting acts such as Mogwai, Zan Lyons and Lorn to perform and showcase their unique musical and visual works.
Simon Grennan of artist team Grennan & Sperandio was out and about in Ulverston over the Summer of 2010, asking all sorts of people to tell him if they've ever seen a colour that really meant something to them, and why. Simon asked the question in clubs and societies, groups, schools and meeting-places all around Ulverston. Grennan & Sperandio attempted to document and re-create as many of people’s experiences as they could, for a new book. Called ‘Profound Colours’ (of course), the book was given away as a gift to everyone taking part and then to every household in Ulverston, in November 2010. Now that’ll give life a bit of colour!
The Lanternhouse Gardening Project is a pilot project and collaboration between Lanternhouse and Ulverston Day Services, with the help of new media artist Ellie Chaney and gardener Ruth Shepard. Already very green fingered from maintaining their allotment at Ford Park Community Centre, Ulverston Day Services’ most enthusiastic gardeners were invited to come to 12 morning sessions over the summer to explore ways in which the garden could become a better environment for both visitors and staff.
